In Australia we have some extreme heat coming our way, as we do every summer, and of course, extreme heat can have a detrimental effect on almost anything…

Your nappies, swim nappies, wet bags and training pants contain components which are more susceptible to heat damage than most items of clothing.

Prolonged exposure to heat (whether from the sun, a heater or a tumble dryer) can damage the waterproofing, elastics and fabric fibres of your products, so it’s important that during the long, hot months of our Australian summers, these items are protected from the scorching temperatures.

  • Dry your nappies, wet bags and training pants in the shade or inside.
  • Hang your nappies out in the evening and bring them back in before 9 am. In the height of summer, they’ll dry overnight and leaving them out during the heat of the day will only make them feel like cardboard.
  • If you live in a particularly humid climate, try drying your nappies under a fan as it can be difficult to dry nappies properly outside in humid climates.
  • Rely heavily on your flat and prefold cloth nappies, as these don’t contain elastic. Your flats and prefolds can be dried outside in the shade, while your covers stay inside over a rack.
  • Heat + time + moisture = mould! Keep your lid off your nappy bucket so that there is air circulating around your nappies. Wash more frequently and keep your washing machine clean.

In many ways, cloth nappying in summer can be easier than it is in the winter months, so don’t let the 40+ temps stop you. Just keep an eye on the forecast and plan accordingly.

We’d love to hear from you! How do you keep your nappies protected during our long hot summers?
